About Prairie & Pine Canines™
Prairie & Pine Canines™ is our small, family-owned breeding program in Colstrip, Montana.
We raise our dogs and puppies in our home and intentionally keep our program small so we can remain personally involved with every litter. Our approach is centered on family life, hands-on care, honest communication, and finding committed homes for our puppies.
OUR STORY
Meet Paul and Breinn
Prairie & Pine Canines™ is owned and operated by Paul Markiss and Breinn Freeman Markiss.
Our dogs live with us in our home and are part of our everyday family life. Keeping our program small allows us to remain closely involved with our dogs, each litter, and the families interested in bringing home one of our puppies.
As we move closer to retirement, we are returning to breeding on a very small scale. We value personal involvement, honest communication, and finding committed homes where each puppy can become a deeply loved companion.
BREEDING EXPERIENCE
A Lifelong Love of Raising Dogs
Breinn’s experience with dogs goes back to the late 1990s, when she began breeding yellow and strawberry-blonde Labradors. She later raised several Labradoodle litters, always with a strong focus on temperament, family fit, and raising puppies with care.
After stepping away from breeding while raising a family and focusing on work, Breinn and Paul are now returning on a very small scale.
Prairie & Pine Canines™ reflects that next chapter: a home-based program centered on thoughtful breeding, close involvement with each litter, and dogs that become deeply loved members of their families.
LIFE WITH OUR DOGS
Raised as Part of the Family
Our dogs and puppies are part of our family from day one. They live in our home, grow up surrounded by everyday family life, and receive the hands-on care and attention that comes from being raised right alongside us.
Our puppies experience the normal sounds, routines, and activity of a family home rather than being raised in a separate commercial kennel environment.
Raising them close to us also allows us to provide daily care, observe their development, and begin learning about their individual personalities as they grow.

A Small Program With Personal Involvement
We intentionally keep our breeding program small so we can remain closely involved with our dogs, each litter, and the families interested in our puppies.
We breed for the qualities we appreciate in our dogs, including loving temperaments, sound structure, strong family bonds, and the characteristics that make each breed special.
We also care deeply about where each puppy is placed. Through the puppy application and personal conversations, we take time to learn about prospective families and determine whether one of our puppies may be a good fit for their household, lifestyle, and expectations.
